With conditional restart (install-* tags), the homeserver entry for
Synapse fell through to `restart_necessary: true`, and the worker
entries carried no flag at all, which systemd_service_manager also
treats as "restart". Every install-all and install-service synapse
therefore restarted Synapse and all of its workers, even when nothing
had changed. Without workers, systemd also restarted most bridges and
bots, whose units require matrix-synapse.service.
Compute matrix_synapse_restart_necessary from the tasks that install
what Synapse runs: homeserver.yaml, the initial config and signing key,
the log config, labels and systemd service, the container image (pulled,
self-built or customized), each worker's config, labels and systemd
service, and the downloaded or cloned extension modules. Workers follow
the same decision, as they read the same files.
Synapse also mounts the appservice registration files written by other
roles. Add matrix_homeserver_app_service_registration_changed in
group_vars/matrix_servers, which checks the registered result of each
task installing one of the files listed in
matrix_homeserver_container_extra_arguments_auto, so that a changed
registration still restarts Synapse and its workers. The double-puppet
role did not register its result; it does now.
The Synapse image pull and three extension downloads all registered
their result as `result`. The downloads run first, so the pull's result
overwrote theirs before the restart decision could read them; they now
use role-prefixed names.
With Synapse workers enabled, inject_worker.yml appends each worker's
service to devture_systemd_service_manager_services_list_auto with
set_fact. That templates the whole list, including every service's
restart_necessary value, when the matrix-synapse role initializes, and
the resulting fact outranks group_vars. Services whose restart flag is
set after that point are then only started, not restarted, on install-*
runs even when their configuration changed. That includes the
matrix-synapse role's own reverse-proxy companion, Goofys and S3 storage
provider timer, and the services of every later role that sets a restart
flag (Element, Grafana, Prometheus, Traefik and others).
Collect worker services in matrix_synapse_worker_systemd_services_list
and append it to the auto list in group_vars/matrix_servers, like the
other entries there, so the list stays lazy.
Include inject_worker.yml once and loop inside each task instead of
including it once per worker. With 19 workers this cuts the step from
26.2 s to 5.3 s on ansible-core 2.20.1 (controller-only, one run). Also
fix two stream-writer failure messages that referenced the undefined
`item`, and report all missing worker properties in one message.
The ownership repair added in e5b8de8c2 is not sufficient on every Ansible privilege-escalation setup. Git may still see a different effective owner after the checkout has been recursively chowned, as demonstrated by #5065.
Pass an exact, task-scoped safe.directory setting to all 56 server-side git tasks. Keep the ownership repair as well, because it remains necessary for filesystem permissions. The two controller-side theme checkouts already use the same protection.
The `matrix_synapse_experimental_features_msc3202_device_masquerading_enabled`
entry was missing its closing angle bracket, so anyone still setting
that variable was told to rename it to `<removed - this feature is
enabled by default now`.

6b4b7647e fixed this for synapse-usage-exporter only. A checkout owned by
a different user makes the git task fail from then on, either with a
permission error or with git's dubious-ownership protection, until
someone removes the directory on the host by hand. It gets into that
state when the matrix user's uid changes (a server migration or a restore
onto a differently numbered user), when an earlier clone ran as another
user, or when someone runs git as root inside the checkout.
Every other role cloning a repository onto the server was open to the
same failure, so ensure the checkout's ownership recursively before
updating it at the remaining 54 sites.
The three matrix-synapse ext clones also gain force=yes. They were the
only on-server clones without it, which left a checkout that an
interrupted run had half-written wedged, instead of repaired on the next
run.
matrix-matrixto used to clone as root into a directory that nothing ever
chowned, unlike every other role. It now becomes the matrix user too.
The Element Web and SchildiChat Web theme checkouts live on the Ansible
controller, where correcting ownership is not ours to do, so they merely
mark the checkout as a safe directory for git.

None of these flags exist in current Synapse:
- msc3266_enabled: MSC3266 support was stabilized in Synapse v1.153.0 and the room summary API is now always enabled
- msc4140_enabled: this was never a Synapse configuration setting in any released version. Delayed events have always been controlled by the `max_event_delay_duration` setting, which the playbook was emitting alongside the flag. The toggle is now named `matrix_synapse_delayed_events_enabled`.
- msc4429_enabled: MSC4429 support has not landed in any released Synapse version, so this flag never had any effect

* feat: support container_network=host across all roles + systemd templates
Mirror the pattern Slavi introduced for matrix-coturn (aafa8f0) across the
fork: every 'Ensure X container network is created' task gets a
'when: <var> not in ["", "host"]' guard so MDAD does not try to
docker_network create a network literally named 'host' (returns 403,
since host is a pre-defined Docker network).
Mirror the same guard in every systemd unit template that does
'ExecStartPre=docker network connect <addnet> <container>' loops over
matrix_<role>_container_additional_networks: skip the connects when the
container is on host networking (where additional --network attaches
are invalid).
Unblocks DiD setups where MDAD-managed containers share their host's
network namespace (matrix-mdad outer compose service joined to central
postgres/openldap networks) to reach external services on the outer
Docker daemon.
* Simplify container network guards (!= 'host') and fix duplicate when
Guarding on the empty string ('') as well was misleading: systemd unit
templates still render an unconditional --network= flag, so an empty
network value produces a broken docker create command. Only 'host' is
actually supported, so only guard on that. This also matches the
existing convention in the Traefik role
(when: traefik_container_network != 'host').
Also fix a duplicate when key in the meshtastic-relay role, where the
network-creation task already had a when condition - the two are now
combined into a list.

Replaces `community.docker.docker_image` with the modern
`docker_image_pull` and `docker_image_build` split modules across all
four task files (synapse, reverse_proxy_companion, goofys,
rust-synapse-compress-state). Drops the `ansible_version` compatibility
ladder and removes four `_container_image_force_pull` variables (the new
pull module handles registry refresh natively via `pull: always`).
The Synapse self-build path uses `ansible.builtin.shell` for BuildKit
support and is left as-is. The customizations image build (which builds
on top of the locally-tagged synapse image) is converted to
`docker_image_build` with `pull: false`, preserving its existing
rebuild-trigger semantics.

Some client API endpoints (e.g. keys/upload) are backed by Synapse stream writers and
should not rely on broad worker regexes or route-order fallthrough for correctness.
When explicit per-stream routing is missing, requests may be captured by generic, room, or client_reader workers, instead of:
- going to the configured stream writer
- or to `main` when that stream writer is not enabled
This refactors synapse-reverse-proxy-companion's routing so that web-facing stream-backed endpoint families
are handled explicitly and early, with deterministic writer-or-main fallback.
Add first-class support for the missing `device_lists` stream writer,
generalize the same routing model to `push_rules`,
and remove stale broad-route ownership for device-list-sensitive endpoints.
The companion role was tightly coupled to Synapse through shared tags, worker routing, and lifecycle ordering. Keeping them separate added coordination overhead without practical benefits, especially for parallelized execution.
This merges the role into matrix-synapse while keeping companion logic organized under dedicated reverse_proxy_companion task/template subdirectories.
Compatibility is preserved:
- matrix_synapse_reverse_proxy_companion_* variable names remain unchanged
- install/setup companion-specific tags remain available
Cross-role/global wiring is now in group_vars (matrix-synapse section), while role defaults provide sensible standalone defaults and self-wiring for Synapse-owned values.
These three roles have multiple variable prefixes each:
- kakaotalk: matrix_appservice_kakaotalk + matrix_appservice_kakaotalk_node
- telegram: matrix_mautrix_telegram + matrix_mautrix_telegram_lottieconverter
- synapse: matrix_synapse + matrix_synapse_customized + matrix_synapse_rust_synapse_compress_state
For each: renamed _docker_image* to _container_image* (and _docker_src*,
_docker_repo* where applicable), added deprecation entries in
validate_config.yml, updated group_vars references, and moved
deprecation tasks to the front of validate_config.yml.

* Enable Internal Admin API Access separately from Public access.
* Add Config variable for Draupnir Hijack command
And also make the internal admin API be automatically activated when this capability is used.
* Apply suggestions from code review

* Further Refine Internal Admin API
* Add Non Worker Labels for Internal Admin API
* Variable Rename
* Add validation rules for Internal Synapse admin API
* Add Draupnir Admin API required config validation.
* Override `matrix_synapse_reverse_proxy_companion_container_labels_internal_client_synapse_admin_api_traefik_entrypoints` via group vars
* Wire `matrix_bot_draupnir_admin_api_enabled` to `matrix_bot_draupnir_config_admin_enableMakeRoomAdminCommand` in Draupnir's `defaults/main.yml`
* Remove unnecessary `matrix_bot_draupnir_admin_api_enabled` override from `group_vars/matrix_servers`
The same value is now (more appropriately) defined in Draupnir's `defaults/main.yml` file anyway.
* Add additional condition (`matrix_bot_draupnir_enabled`) for enabling `matrix_synapse_container_labels_internal_client_synapse_admin_api_enabled`
* Use a separate task for validating `matrix_bot_draupnir_admin_api_enabled` when `matrix_bot_draupnir_config_admin_enableMakeRoomAdminCommand`
The other task deals with checking for null and not-blank and can't handle booleans properly.

This:
- brings consistency - no more mixing `_name_prefix` and `_registry_prefix`
- adds extensibility - a future patch will allow reconfiguring all registry prefixes for all roles in the playbook
We still have `_docker_` vs `_container_` inconsistencies.
These may be worked on later.
