The Cognitive Balance Theory

Working theory behind the "Seasonal Intelligence" book project. Reconstructed from a 126-message ChatGPT thread (July 2025 March 2026).

Origin: two theories you brought, one you recalled

The whole thing started from three separate observations, which turned out to fit together almost too neatly.

1. Pattern recognition as energy conservation. Everything in life runs on energy, so thinking should too. Stereotypes, heuristics, and pattern-matching aren't laziness — they're the brain reusing an existing model instead of building one from scratch, the same way vision is predictive (which is why optical illusions work at all). This applies as much to high-level concepts like stereotypes about people as it does to low-level perception.

2. Tiered news processing. The brain evolved to sort information into three tiers of relevance: local news (direct effect on you, confirmable, from within a day's walk), neighborhood news (indirect effect, gives context, from within a day's ride, usually unconfirmable but trusted), and world news (outside your habitation range, unconfirmable, effectively gossip). Modern information overload comes largely from collapsing these tiers — a war on the other side of the world, delivered in real-time HD, gets processed with the urgency of local news.

3. The "I" / "me" networks (recalled from something you'd heard, not originated by you). The brain has a Default Mode Network active when idle, responsible for narrative, self-reflection, and agency (the "I"), and a Task-Positive Network active when busy, responsible for external monitoring and performance (the "me"). Keeping the brain constantly occupied might skew personality toward "me" — toward feeling life happens to you rather than through you.

These three turned out to be mutually reinforcing, and together they became the Cognitive Balance Theory: a unified model of energy-efficient cognition, network switching, narrative selfhood, and informational overload.

The three-network model

DMN and TPN are broadly anticorrelated — when one is active, the other is suppressed. The SN is the mediator that decides which one should be running right now. The central, load-bearing claim of the whole theory is that the Salience Network — not the DMN or TPN individually — is the real lever. Strengthening SN flexibility matters more than favoring either mode.

A vivid personal example that anchored the model: walking alone in the woods, talking to yourself or to things around you. That's DMN running freely (narrative self-construction, internalized social cognition) with SN gently, passively alert (not overwhelmed, just monitoring), and TPN nearly idle. It's the inverse of modern overstimulation, and part of why solitary walks feel disproportionately restorative.

What weakens vs. strengthens the SN

Applications and extensions developed in the thread

News processing, restated. Three tiers were later reframed (candidate replacement names considered: Immediate/Contextual/Narrative, or Personal/Relational/Mythic Zone). The failure mode is always the same: distant, unverifiable, low-actionability information gets mis-tagged as high-salience by modern media, so the SN spends energy on it as if it were a local fire.

Societal-scale implication. A society whose population is collectively trained into chronic TPN (via media, schooling, work culture) may be structurally biased toward interventionist, "we must do something" foreign policy and crisis-framed politics — not from malice, but because its collective cognitive architecture can't distinguish local stakes from distant ones. Reflective/"slow" cultures that preserve DMN-like collective practices (ritual, storytelling, silence) may be structurally biased toward restraint.

Relationships. Chronic TPN or DMN dominance, and especially SN impairment (responding in the wrong mode — task-solving when comfort is needed, or vice versa), shows up predictably across parentchild, romantic, and coworker relationships. Most "work/life balance" complaints are really SN-switching failures, not time-management failures.

Social media, reframed. The dopamine-hijack critique of social media is real but shallow. The deeper mechanism is salience distortion: social media collapses the local/neighborhood/world hierarchy and forces rapid, ungrounded mode-switching, which overloads SN, floods TPN with microtasks, and suppresses DMN. Dopamine-minimizing UI tweaks don't fix this, because the content structure still confuses relevance tiers. Responsible use requires active retriage ("is this local, neighborhood, or world?"), scheduled windows, and post-scroll DMN reflection — full abstention is the more effective but less pragmatic option.

Stress-hunger and exercise. A real, personally observed phenomenon: intense focus work at a computer produces hunger despite no physical exertion, while multi-day treks produce almost none despite heavy physical exertion. Explanation: sustained TPN activation is metabolically expensive and suppresses interoceptive signals, so the brain interprets cognitive load as a fuel request — "stress hunger" is a miscommunication, not a real deficit. Trekking keeps DMN/TPN/SN in a balanced rhythm, so hunger signals stay trustworthy. Practical corollary: 10,000 steps in an office corridor does almost nothing for this; 5,000 steps in a natural, unstimulated setting does much more, because it's the salience environment of the walk that matters, not just the step count.

The DMN-based weight loss framework. If the nervous system reads life as chronically threatening (via TPN overdrive and SN overload), the body tends to guard fat as an emergency reserve regardless of calorie math. The proposed framework has four daily anchors: (1) DMN activation practice — unstructured nature walk, journaling, or lying still with no screen, 2060 min/day; (2) SN recalibration ritual — checking "am I hungry, bored, anxious?" before meals and sitting with satisfaction after; (3) low-salience movement — untracked, metric-free walking or dancing, 35x/week; (4) a hunger-differentiation window — delaying a meal by 3060 minutes while doing a calming DMN activity to distinguish real from stress-driven hunger. The core reframe: weight regulation follows nervous-system safety, not willpower.

Biphasic sleep. Pre-industrial societies (documented historically) often slept in two phases separated by 12 hours of quiet wakefulness — praying, reflecting, or talking. That middle window functioned as a natural DMN-activation period: TPN fully offline, SN calm, no task structure, emotional/narrative integration happening freely. Modern single-block, screen-compressed sleep skips this window entirely, which may explain waking up tired despite adequate hours. Practical takeaway: a calm 24am waking shouldn't automatically be fought with anxiety about "not sleeping" — it may be the brain reclaiming lost integration time. Where full biphasic sleep isn't practical, the benefit can be partially recovered with a genuinely screen-free, task-free hour before bed and unstructured quiet time after waking.

Seasonal extension — the theory's biggest leap. The DMN/TPN/SN cycle doesn't just operate daily; it can map onto the calendar year, and pre-industrial societies structured work and ritual around exactly this rhythm. This is the connective idea that turned the theory into a book:

  • Winter — DMN-dominant: stillness, integration, narrative self. Not the time for new goals, despite the modern fixation on January resolutions.
  • Spring — SN scanning forward again: curiosity, light planning, low-pressure experimentation.
  • Summer — TPN-led with relaxed SN: flow, creativity, high output, sociability — the traditional vacation season, for good reason.
  • Autumn — SN sharpens, TPN narrows: review, delivery, documentation, closure before the cycle resets.

Modern institutional calendars (fiscal year-end in December, vacation clustered in the most beautiful part of the year, school year misaligned with natural rhythm) are, under this theory, structurally misaligned with the cycle they're supposed to support — a claim the thread applies concretely to consultants, SME owners/team leads, and parents balancing demanding jobs with family rhythm.

Stress-tested: the devil's-advocate pass

The thread deliberately tried to break the theory. Fair criticisms surfaced, each with a working counter:

  • Oversimplification — DMN/TPN/SN aren't as cleanly modular or switch-like as the model implies; they overlap and co-activate (e.g. in creative flow states). Counter: still useful as a functional/behavioral metaphor even if the underlying biology is fuzzier.
  • DMN and TPN aren't always opposed — skilled dual-mode work (a therapist listening while reflecting, a jazz musician improvising within structure) shows real-time cooperation, not just alternation. Counter: the theory targets chronic lock-in, not momentary coordination — the problem is losing the ability to switch, not the coexistence itself.
  • Western-centric framing — the model assumes a solitary, individualist notion of narrative selfhood that doesn't map cleanly onto collectivist or oral-storytelling cultures. Counter: this may support rather than undermine the theory (it could explain why some cultures are less imbalanced) but means it isn't universal without adaptation.
  • No empirical data yet — no direct experiments link SN impairment to role confusion or media-induced DMN suppression. Counter: it's a theoretical framework generating testable hypotheses, not a settled clinical claim.
  • Risk of pathologizing normal variation — a new parent living in TPN most of the day, or an artist living in DMN-heavy flow, aren't dysfunctional. Counter: the theory targets chronic rigidity without integration, not any particular mode itself — this distinction needs to stay explicit wherever the theory is presented.
  • Philosophical reduction — reducing "I"/agency to network activation sidesteps questions of free will, meaning, and socially constructed selfhood. Counter: the model describes mechanism, not metaphysics — complementary to, not a replacement for, those questions.

The diagnostic self-test (drafted, not yet validated)

A 20-question, four-section self-assessment exists in the thread: TPN Lock ("doing mode overload"), DMN Lock ("reflective paralysis"), SN Strain ("switchboard fatigue"), and a fourth section on regulating practices (scored inversely). Each section scores 020; ≥12 on any of the first three flags a likely imbalance, ≤8 on the fourth flags low use of protective habits. This exists as a full draft (see the original export) but has not been piloted on real respondents — worth treating as v0.1, not a validated instrument.

Where the theory sits relative to existing literature

You independently arrived at ideas with real academic lineage — not a weakness, but worth citing rather than re-deriving:

  • Cognitive Miser Theory (Fiske & Taylor, 1984) — heuristic-based conservation of mental effort.
  • Predictive processing / free energy principle (Karl Friston, Andy Clark) — the brain as a prediction machine minimizing error, not building models from scratch.
  • System 1 / System 2 (Kahneman, Thinking, Fast and Slow) — fast pattern-based vs. slow deliberate cognition.
  • Dunbar's number and tribal cognition (Robin Dunbar) — a hard-wired ceiling on "inside the tribe" social processing.
  • Media ecology (McLuhan, Postman's Amusing Ourselves to Death, Carr's The Shallows) — media form distorts perceived relevance.
  • Narrative/randomness critique (Taleb, Fooled by Randomness, Antifragile) — most "news" is low-value narrative noise.
  • Context collapse (danah boyd, Sherry Turkle) — blending of personal/local/global audiences online.

This is a fully-formed, internally cross-tested theory with a drafted diagnostic tool, a full book outline in English and Czech, and a curated reading list — but zero empirical validation and no written manuscript yet.
